NI Championship Round 9LAN_THEME_20 |
| Round 9 at Craigavon model car club will be 1 to remember for local man Mike Sloan where he lifted the 2010 Irish championship in style. Moira’s Michael Sloan started the day off joint 1st in the points with Rasharkin’s David cairns. Cairns until last time out had been the season leader from an excellent start to the campaign. In the heats mike blasted his main rival away with a faultless 22 laps to grab pole position and the extra points to put one hand firmly on the trophy. David’s brother Philip had his best qualifying run to date to grab the second spot and Portadowns Kenny McCann made the top 3 Bandbridge’s Robert charters slipped into 4th pushing David right back down to 5th. In the main A final mike lead from start to finish holding off an early charge from Philip cairns and tussle it was until lap 24 where cairns had to retire with mechanical failure. McCann then tried his move on Sloan but pushed himself into an error and had to settle for 2nd 2 laps down. Robert charters made the top 3 leaving David cairns 4th and therefore Sloan becoming the saloon car champion 2010. The B final was won by Lurgan's Michael cairns on 54 laps with Dublin’s Anthony Fitzpatrick 2nd also on 54 laps and just 3 seconds behind Portadowns Tom Patterson made the top 3. Super newbie Dan Ahern from limerick set a personal best lap of 19.16 on his 4th time out…super stuff Dan. In the bike class Portadown men David Adair already crowned Irish champion in round 8 and Craig Robinson runner up had nothing to lose and so started from the back with a 10sec delay just for a little play time. That left Lurgan's Michael Cairns to lead them off for his first time ever. Cairns lead all the way until the last minute of the 7 minute race where the flying Robinson charged past and grabbed the win for leg 1. Leg 2 started off the same but this time Robert charters came into play and took the lead on lap 6. charters held off for some 4 or 5 laps until the hard charging Adair and Robinson dual landed on his back wheel on lap 12 forcing him to move over and let the 2 past. Adair went on to win with Robinson 5secs behind. In the buggy class Newry's Andrew Fegan became the Irish champion at his first attempt when his son Nathan suffered an early error and had to go in to the pits for repair. Nathan returned some 3 minutes later and fought all the way to the flag but the 9 laps lost left his dad the easy race winner. Bandbridge’s John Jennett made a move for the lead on lap 7 but an out braking move ended his race early in the tyre wall. With all 3 championships now sewn up the final round on Sept 11 should be a lot more relaxed fun before the closing 2 day ULSTER TT on 25/26 Sept where some of Britain’s best have now added there names to the entry list. NI Championship Round 8LAN_THEME_20 |
| Round 8 of the Northern Ireland Championship was greeted with pretty near perfect weather conditions, offering up some really fast racing. In the saloons class Moira’s Michael Sloan blasted his way to 22 laps in qualifying in his first run giving him pole position for the final where he remained for the rest of qualifying. Kenny McCann and David Cairns both tussled for the remaining positions in the top 3, both clocking 21 laps with Kenny just pipping David to 2nd on the grid. CMCC also welcomed two new drivers to the racing, Pat McKee from the Moy and returning driver Darren Garvey from Lurgan. In the B Final Portadown’s Tom Patterson started on pole ahead of Michael Cairns, all drivers got away clean but mechanical problems started to set in for all drivers within the opening 10 laps. By lap 13 Tom Patterson began to settle into a consistent pace however the hard pushing Michael Cairns was always close. Darren Garvey raced at a very steady pace and began to settle back into the racing again after an 8 year break from the racing. Pat McKee drove well for his first outing showing improvement throughout the day, unfortunately he had to retire on lap 22. In the A final all drivers got away clean from the start with Michael Sloan setting down a blistering pace as he had been all day to lead the race from start to finish. Further down the field brothers Philip & David Cairns from Rasharkin were battling it out for 2nd place, Philip driving one off his best races to date began closing in on David by lap 45 and after a few laps managed to overtake into 2nd spot, unfortunately mechanical failure ended Philips race prematurely and was forced to retire on 71 laps. Kenny McCann was drove a good race throughout, after slipping to 4th managed to fight back and finished 2nd overall. Dan Ahern from Limerick qualified directly for the A final for the first time and continued to show good pace until his engine failed on lap 75. Overall a very good clean fast race driven by all drivers. A 3rd consecutive win for Michael Sloan turns up the heat on the Championship battle between himself and David Cairns with both drivers now on equal points. In the Bike class Craig Robinson from Portadown set down the benchmark and was the man to beat all day posting the fastest laps of the day on his way to pole position. In the final round of qualifying David Adair went for one final push for pole but came up short against Robinsons blistering pace. Throughout qualifying Michael Cairns and Robert Charters were very close both posting 14 laps. Down the field John Campbell and Tom Patterson both qualified with 11 laps each. With the Bike Championship within David Adair’s grasp, he needed to race both legs of the final in order to keep his hold on the Championship, after attending a wedding he made it back between the service and reception to finish 2nd behind the flying Craig Robinson, The 2nd place was enough to crown David the 2010 NI Champion. NI Championship Round 7LAN_THEME_20 |
| Sloan Is The Master In The Wet Craigavon model car club returned to the NI Championship round 7 at the weekend after a short summer break. With a freshly painted up track (thanks to the few who gave up there holidays to get it done) it has been highlighted and talked about as one of or maybe the best in Britain. Racing started out dry and Moria’s Mike Sloan wasn’t too long at getting back on his hot pace to secure the pole position. Portadowns GP winner Kenny McCann was back too and with a few adjustments here and there soon settled in to second spot a few seconds off Sloan’s pace that left the Rasharkin brothers of David and Philip Cairns to battle it out for the first 3. For the race the great Ulster weather soon changed and 2 very heavy down pours left the track like an ice rink. At the off the first lap took up to 45 seconds to complete compared to dry lap in the early 20 second margin. Sloan led from start to finish with an unbelievable and almost faultless run. Rasharkin’s David cairns 4th on the grid also did some tidy driving to get to second and keep his championship hopes alive fending off a late charge from the struggling Kenny McCann who held on to fill the top 3 . New guy Dan Ahern from limerick returned for a second time to CMCC to be rewarded with some really fine results, a second in the B final which was won by Portadowns Tom Patterson was enough to make him happy but it was also enough to get him promoted to the main A final in 8 place on the grid . He then battled his way up to a very impressive 4th place in his first wet race. Two other southern drivers made the long trip up to one being Dublin’s Anthony Fitzpatrick who struggled a little with the wet and had to settle for 8th. The other driver was Wicklow’s Cormac Wyatt. Cormac had to settle for a place in the spectator’s bay as his car was still in transit from last weeks EFRA race meeting in Europe. In the bike class Portadowns David Adair grabbed the pole and a win in leg 1 (dry) but all eyes were on Craig Robinson also a Portadown man for his skill in wet leg 2. Adair’s bike went down at the off and Robinson stormed past out into a clear track. Lurgan’s Michael Cairns jumped up into second and chased hard after Robinson but just had far too much to do to match or even get close to Robinsons very fast wet pace. Tom Patterson had his best run to date in the bikes by making it into the top 3. The buggy class seen the most action again when their race started out dry and ended in the wet. Newry’s Andy Fegan led from the off at the start with Nathan next in line and pushing real hard to find a way past also finding the fastest lap of the race. Bandbridge’s John Jennett was next tied in a battle with Portadowns Paul Taylor. With 10 minutes remaining the heavens opened and turned the whole race upside down it forced all the drivers into the pits where they changed to wet tires and back out with 6 minutes left. Andy went on to win with Nathan 3 seconds behind and Taylor made it back on track quicker than Jennett to go on and grab the 3 spot A Final Saloons (Wet) 1. NI Championship Round 6LAN_THEME_20 |
| Sloan Back On Form Craigavon model car club hosted round 6 of the Northern Ireland championship at the weekend with Moria’s Mike Sloan back on track and claiming all the car honours. In the heats, Mike sailed to pole position helped with absents of Cormac Wyatt & Robert Charters! That didn’t stop Rasharkin’s David Cairns trying every thing he had to have a go but it wasn’t enough for Sloan’s incredible pace! In the final’s Mike wasn’t challenged from start to finish for top spot but a tidy drive by the Moria man through a field of un-believable hurdles left him with a clean sweep weekend and most of all the top Championship points which puts him right back into the heat of the championship battle! CMCC welcomes new driver Dan Ahern. Dan from as far away as Limerick made the 440ish miles round trip to Craigavon to race his beloved saloon. It all paid off in the B Final where Dan claimed the win on his first outing and got the promotion he’d hoped for, a slot in the top A Final race, an early failure lost him some time in the pits but was still able to manage a well earned 6th place. Another new driver Gareth Bullick made his first appearance as well and followed Dan home in the B Final for the second spot. In the bike class Portadown’s David Adair did it all over again to claim the top honours and more or less seal the top of the championship table spot but all eyes on the day were on first time out man Stephen Smyth. Rasharkin’s Stephen Smyth in the process of building a new car took up the challenge of driving 1 of Adair’s spare bikes just for a bit of fun but ended up in a top 3 battle throughout the weekends racing. Smyth eventually claimed that 3rd overall spot as an overall result leaving Portadowns Tom Patterson scratching his head as for what he has to do now! Portadowns Craig Robinson grabbed a well earned 2nd spot. Antrims John Campbell called it a day from the saloon class to take up the ever growing challenge in the bike class and a 6th overall place made his day to a positive bike start. The buggy class saw Newry’s Andrew Fegan do the hard earned weekend clean sweep too to put himself back on track for the Northern Ireland championship title. His son Nathan done all he could to grab the top spot and at one stage had it in his grasp but in the closing stages an error forced him out of the race and there fore left Andrew with a much easier and vital win. Paul Taylor returned from a short break to grab the second spot and Nathan’s error still got him in the top 3. NI Championship Round 5LAN_THEME_20 |
| Craigavon model car club returned to the Northern Ireland championship for round 5 at the weekend after the previous and successful NI GP. With a similar driver layout The racing was straight back to where it finished off hard and fast right from the first heat. In the saloons class Wicklow’s Cormac Wyatt set the pace with a blistering 21 laps given a dusty but warm track condition. Moria’s Mike Sloan still setting up on a new car was hard on his tail also on 21 laps but just a few seconds off Wyatt’s pace. Rasharkin’s David Cairns made the top 3. That’s how they started off and that’s how they finished in the main A final. Philip Cairns, David’s brother had one of his best races to date dicing with Portadowns Robert Charters all the way to the line over the half hour final and eventually taking a well earned 4th spot… the B Final was won by the forever hard trying Tom Patterson. Portadowns Patterson slotted into pole position for the B final from good result in the heats. Numerous charges from Lurgan’s Michael Cairns and Dublin’s Anthony Fitzpatrick failed to knock Patterson off course and therefore held it together to grab a well deserved win and promotion to the main A final grid.. Bikes/ Portadowns David Adair returned to (business as usual) for the bike championship with a race meeting he’ll not forget for a while setting 2 new club records and another weekend clean sweep. Portadowns Craig Robinson set the pace in the early stages with a blistering 16 laps and looked like all the honours where going his way but Adair hit back in the last run to bust the 16 lap barrier and set a new race record of 17 laps and also setting a new lap record of 24.7 on the way. Robinson also managed to hit the 17 lap mark but was 6 seconds short of Adair’s target. Lurgan’s Michael Cairns and Brodie Adair had the closest racing in the class on the day changing places numerous times over the 7 minute runs with Cairns eventually getting the better of Adair and claiming that vital top 3 spot. Another new comer Lurgan’s Steven Cairns joined up to get his first taste of RC bike racing a few more steady runs should have him in the thick of it.. Buggies Newry’s junior driver Nathan Fegan again stole the honours in the buggy class but this time with a lot more luck thrown his way. Andy Fegan and Bandbridge’s GP winner John Jennett took an early lead but a hard clash some 7 or 8 laps in took them both out ending the race early and handing the overall win to Nathan The next race meeting is round 6.. 2010 NI Grand PrixLAN_THEME_20 |
| A record turnout at Craigavon model car club kicked the Northern Ireland grand prix off with a bang. The good old British weather held out and also played a big part which helped attract back a few old faces to the model racing scene. Portadowns Kenny McCann was one of the few to return from a three year break and showed that he’s still got what it takes to be a winner. Kenny blitzed the field in qualifying with a new lap record for the saloons and also breaking the record for the most laps, 22 laps in the 7 minute runs. Moria’s Mike Sloan out with a brand new car for the G.P hit back right away at McCann’s pace and also smashed the 21 lap barrier for 22 laps. In the main A final McCann led from start to finish breaking the lap record again with a 18.63 lap, and finishing with 91 laps in total over the 30 minutes, Mike Sloan, David Cairns and Cormac Wyatt all changed places several times for second spot, Cairns fought hard to win the position with Wyatt finishing in 3rd, Sloan had to settle for 4th after being forced to make a 2 minute pit stop. The B final was won by Cormac Wyatt with Antrim’s John Campbell 2nd and Rasharkin’s Stephen Smyth 3rd. Cormac Wyatt and John Campbell would both gain entry to the a final due to their finishing positions. Portadowns own David Adair set the record straight in the bikes class, getting pole from the heats and finishing top in both legs of the A final, this meant David would claim the N.I grand prix for the second year on the trot. Robert charters also a Portadown man piled the pressure on during the 2 legs, but it wasn’t enough to spoil Adair’s day. Lurgan’s Michael Cairns had an impressive run clinching 3rd spot. Brodie Adair still new to the club bettered himself on the day and impressed his dad to grab 4th spot. Banbridge’s John Jennett grabbed his first ever win in the buggy class in style. He led the pack off from pole with junior Nathan Fagan making an early attempt to gain 1st but only to touch wheels and be forced into the pits early for repairs. Andy Fagan moved up into second then pushed hard to put Jennett under pressure even a fastest lap from Fagan in the final few minutes wasn’t enough and Jennett went on to claim the G.P win. Andy and Nathan both finished up the top 3.
